While a lot of amateurs will be unfamiliar with how the moon affects fish, the pros know that the phase of the moon can have a profound effect on fish activity. All experienced fisherman carry a fishing moon calendar. The moon calendar for fishing is based on ancient principles used by Native American peoples, who first noticed that fish have different behavior depending on the phase of the moon. For example, during a full moon, fish might be active in the water and hunting near the surface, during a half moon, those same fish might be sleeping on the bottom and less interested in food. Experienced fisherman fish by the moonlight, and recognize when the best times to go fishing are based on the phase of the moon.
