Knee Boarding Tips For Beginners – Deep Water Starts
, 01 14th, 2009
Being new to the sport of kneeboarding it’s really hard to start off especially if you are a beginner. As an introduction to ‘boat-towed’ sport, a kneeboard is a great piece of equipment to practice with. The low center of gravity often makes it easier to get up on than a water ski or wakeboard, which both require standing up.
Here are two ways to do a deepwater kneeboard start, the belly start and the low buoyancy start.
The Belly Start
• The most common kneeboard start is the belly start or abdomen start. In performing this, you should put down your belly on the board with the strap laying forward and pointing towards the nose of the board.
• The nose of the board should be sticking out of the water. Place your one hand on the side of the board and the other hand grasping the rope and on holding the other side of the board.
• As the boat starts moving pull your knees ahead into the padded knee wells on the board. And as you do this, try not to bend forward, and keep your weight back.
• When you feel balanced, let go of the rope with your one hand, and with the other hand pull the strap up over your knees and tighten the strap to where it feels secure. Keep your arms extended and slightly bent.
Wakeboarding

If you love to spend your vacation in the water and you are the adventurous type, then wakeboarding is just the sport for you. This board sport is relatively new but has gained popularity during the last few years.
In wakeboarding, a boat with a rope tows the rider. The rider rides on a buoyant board, called a wakeboard, and uses the wake to launch himself up into the air and then back into the water. Though this may sound simple, there are quite a few tricks and spins to learn before you can master the sport.
The essentials for wakeboarding are wakeboards and wakeropes. Wakeboard length varies between 120 and 150 centimeters and the wakeboard width is between 40 and 45 centimeters. Beginners should begin with longer wakeboards with square edges or square rails. Square-edged boards are more stable and easier to control, though round-edged boards are easier to land. Round edges also allow boards to easily gain speed, providing quicker lifts during air tricks. Krown, Hyperlite, Liquid Force and CWB are specialized wakeboard manufacturers and their wakeboards cost between $350 to $600.
Experienced wakeboard riders also take into consideration the rockers, fins, bindings and the design of the board. Bindings or boots provide a secure attachment to the boards and should provide a comfortable support for the heel and ankle.
Inflatable Towables
, 01 09th, 2009Water skiing is fun for those who can balance on skis and ride them atop a lake. Lake towables make it possible for anyone to glide on the lake behind a ski boat. These special inflatable toys can bring excitement to any morning or afternoon on the lake.
One type of lake towables allows riders to control the shape of the inflatable by pulling on hand grips. With the Frantic and other Half Pipe boat towables, it is easy to pull up the sides of the flat towable into a shape that looks like a hot dog bun. The Frantic will rock and slide through the water, controlled by the people holding the grips.Groups need not take turns on individual lake towables, either. Ski boats can haul inflatables that will carry 2, 3, or even up to 6 riders at one time. The key to getting the best group lake towables is durability. A heavy gauge PVC bladder is a must, as well as a reinforced towing system.
Marine GPS – What You Should Know
, 01 08th, 2009No doubt you’ve heard of auto GPS or even handheld GPS systems, but you may not be aware that marine GPS units also exist. GPS stands for “Global Positioning System.” This system is basically a set of satellites. They go around the world two times a day, and they transmit information on location and time. They communicate with the marine units and other types of GPS units to help you find your location or easily find out how to get to another location. For those who are planning trips out on the water, these GPS units are definitely a wonderful option.
For thousands of years, many seafarers traveling out on the sea have used the stars as a guide. However, today you can use marine GPS units to help you find your way. These units allow you to see exactly where you are and to find where you need to go. Even excellent mariners have got lost out on the water, so having great marine units can definitely be a great idea and it is an essential part of your gear that you should take along when you go out on the water

Innertubing with a Motor Boat
, 01 05th, 2009
Innertubing is one of the most enjoyable water activities for children and people who are not balance inclined. Innertubing is fun, and when the proper precautions are taken, is also much safer than waterskiing or wakeboarding. For innertubing, you will need at least three people, one person driving the boat, one person flagging, and one person being pulled in the innertube. The person flagging is necessary to alert other boaters when the innertuber is down in the water, and also alert the driver in case the innertuber asks for the boat to be stopped. You’ll also need a special tow rope to pull the innertube; the strength of a regular rope isn’t enough to support an innertube.
With the proper safety measures, you’re sure to have an entire day of fun innertubing with your family and friends. Remember to let the driver have a chance now and then too (if they’ll let someone else drive their boat!).
Fixing an Aged Boat
, 01 05th, 2009
It’s all too common to find older or seldom used boats in the classified advertisements because most people purchase boats and don’t use them enough to warrant owning them. However, for those of us lucky enough to be passionate about boating, we can capitalize on the sale of used watercraft. Often you will find boats that have only been used a handful of times for sale in the classifieds, and even if they’re a little dilapidated, fixing them up is no problem at all with a little elbow grease. In an ideal situation, you’ll want to purchase a boat that has cosmetic damage, but little internal damage. Important parts to check for damage includes the engine, the hull, and the upholstery, as all of these are quite expensive to replace.
Less important parts include boat anchors, windows and window shields, and the cabin furniture, as these items can be replaced inexpensively. With a little work, fixing up boats can be a fun project that yields a great reward; at the end you might even be able to resell it for more!
