Sun Powered Summer Fun!

The summer is the best season to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine, but let’s face it, we all like to bring our cell phones, iPods, and portable media devices with us. There aren’t a whole lot of wall outlets available outdoors, but there is a definite abundance of sunshine. Thus, portable solar panels are a great solution for powering our portable electronics and appliances while we’re enjoying the outdoors. It wouldn’t have been possible to find quality portable solar panels a decade ago, but a technology has become greener, solar energy has become much more efficient. Where a decade ago it would have taken a solar panel the size of an office desk to charge a cell phone, now there are foldable solar panels no larger than a notebook and capable of 12 volt output. Portable solar panels are lightweight and more than ideal for all kinds of summer activities including boating, camping, and backpacking.

As solar energy technology continues to advance, there will be even more solar powered devices that start appearing on the market. In addition, these devices will just continue to become more compact and even more efficient.

handheldcell.pngSolaris’ primary mission is to provide low manufacturing cost, high efficiency and long life solar cells to capture a major portion of the projected growth of the global renewable energy market. Equity financing and Company resources are used exclusively towards this goal. However, since Solaris’ NanoAntennaTM materials present a number of other large market opportunities which are validated in part by the development of high efficiency photovoltaics, we have begun to pursue these other applications through externally funded collaborations, contracts, and agreements. These other applications of our nano-antenna technology and intellectual property include the enhancement of human vision, high performance liquid crystal displays, and chemical and biological sensing.

Solaris Nanosciences is a subsidiary of Spectra Systems Corporation (www.spsy.com), a profitable, private company spun out of Brown University in 1996. Spectra Systems’ core competence in high performance optical materials, intellectual property and physical infrastructure led to the launch of Solaris Nanosciences in May of 2004.

Our broad technology platform addresses the following opportunities:

  • Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells for direct conversion of sunlight to electrical energy at commercially competitive costs,
  • Liquid Crystal Displays with enhanced viewing angles and brightness,
  • Enhanced Vision for patients suffering from diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affecting the retinal photoreceptors.
  • Chemical and Biological Sensing

Flexing Solar Panels

Author: boater, 01 21st, 2009

f-solaris26.jpgA portable, flexing solar power system can be a right way to become familiar with solar power use for those who may not be ready or financially able to invest in larger solar power systems. Flexing solar panels, otherwise known as portable solar panels, convert the sun’s ray directly into 12volt electricity. This makes it ideal technology for charging portable electronics and jump-starting your vehicles’ batteries. These products generally have positive reviews, but it is difficult to outline typical performance parameters because performance is wholly based on weather and climate. The models come in powers ranging from 5 watts to 60 watts.

The flexible solar panels are made of layers of flexible plastic. Many can fold down into the size of a PDA and will fit comfortably in cargo pants. Other varieties are meant to be carried and mounted on backpacks or courier bags. Each foldable solar panel is a self-contained photovoltaic cell and converter. Portable solar power systems are easy to use. There is little to no wiring involved and most systems can be used right away. Consumers are cautioned about how to care for the portable, flexing panels. Users should avoid excessive flexing, and should particularly be careful about crunching up the unit.

While most models can sustain some water exposure, they are not completely waterproof. As a result, they must not be machine-washed nor should they ever be machine dried. If the unit gets dirty or wet, the user should wipe it down with a clean soft cloth. The foldable panels are not meant for continuous outside use. Because of their size, they do not come equipped with as many features as a permanent installation, so can be damaged by constant outdoor use. Other hazards include reversing the polarity or trying to recharge a non-rechargeable battery.

The panels should be kept clean because dirty photovoltaic panels do not absorb solar energy efficiently. Most models come with meters to prevent damage caused by under or over powering. The systems work best when the battery powered electronic is fully charged at the start of use. They are more effective as battery savers.

Foldable solar panels can also be used during times of emergency. While they are not strong enough to restore full electrical power, they can be used to power radios, flashlights, small engines, and other battery-operated survival gear. This has been proven by the use of portable, foldable solar panels by field soldiers. Whether a soldier or a survivalist or a weekend hiker, portable solar power allows an individual to access power outside of the national grid. These systems are also renewable and sustainable.
