Author: boater, 09 21st, 2011
Choosing the correct waterski tow ropes can help you advance in your skills, especially if you’ll be doing slalom waterskiing. Unlike wakeboarders, water-skiers need a rope with stretch. Consider these points before purchasing a rope for waterskiing. Inflatable towables and wakeboards need tow ropes that do not have a lot of a lot of stretch.  Tow ropes are manufactured in lengths so you must make sure you choose the correct length for your needs.

Tow ropes come in several lengths, handle widths and manufactured from different materials.  When you are choosing a tow rope for wake boarding you will probably choose one with a length of fifty to sixty feet and if you are water skiing you will want to choose a tow rope of seventy five to a hundred feet.  If you are wake boarding you want to choose a tow rope that does not stretch very much where when you are skiing it does not make that much difference.  Tow ropes that float are much easier to use than the ones that do not and you will probably find the best selection of tow ropes on the internet.

It is time to get our marine accessories list out and update it and make sure we have everything on it and that they are in good working condition.  One thing we want to check is our tow ropes to make sure they are not frayed or coming apart.  If you are towing someone on a wake board or pulling them on an inflatable towable you do not want a tow rope to break and leave someone floating on a busy water way.  Tow ropes come in different lengths as well as colors and even strength if you are going to be pulling more than one on an inflatable.

Tow Ropes

  • A water ski rope needs to be slightly elastic and able to give with the skier as he or she changes speeds and turns
  • The rope length for standard water skiing is 70 feet, 75 feet if you include the handle
  • Generally, water ski tow ropes are made of polypropylene and will stretch two to three percent of their length when under normal skiing load
  • The give in the rope helps absorb the shock of cutting through the boat wake as a skier crosses from side to side
  • One-quarter-inch diamond braid polyethylene or polypropylene having a breaking strength of more than 800 pounds is recommended
  • Standard water skiing tow ropes may have up to 10 colored sections, or take-offs
  • Take-offs allow for shortening or lengthening the rope from one attachment loop to the next
  • If you want to ski closer to the boat, you merely shorten the rope one or more “take-off” loops

  • Be Safe Towing On The Water

The most dangerous things you can do when towing people on towables, wakeboards, or skis is not using the correct tow rope, using  tow ropes that is to short or to long can be very dangerous to the people being towed.  Pulling people on a inflatable towable can also be very dangerous if you are towing more than one person with tow ropes that are not manufactured for the amount of people you are towing.  Boating can be a lot of fun but you need everything to be as safe as possible so when you are shopping for tow ropes make sure you read the instructions so you know what the rope is designed for.

    Properly Inflated SportsStuff

Under-inflation is one of the main causes of damage to the PVC also resulting in seam failure. Air may expand in the bladder during high temperatures making it necessary to release some during use. Under-inflation may result in damage to the SprotsStuff Towable also. The stress on the seam is greater on the on the product when it is not properly inflated. For proper inflation, compressor adapters and high-volume Nice air Pumps can be purchased directly from Sportsstuff and if you use inflatables a lot a good pump should be part of your marine accessories list.  Conversely, over-inflation causes seam damage. You must really monitor the inflatable when not in use, especially on hot, sunny days. Keep out of the sun when not in use, and if the tube expands, let some of the air out. Rule of thumb when inflating: Very few wrinkles in the cover and the tube should fit rather snug.

    Making the Most of Retirement

    Author: WaterBlogged, 07 06th, 2010

When my wife and I retired a few years ago, we decided to reward ourselves for a lifetime of hard work. For starters, we took a two-year escapade around the globe, traveling to all of the countries we’ve read about in order to experience the culture and scenery firsthand. After we arrived back home, we decided to sell our house and purchase a small waterfront villa.

Since our new abode was considerably cheaper, we had a sizeable chunk of change left over from the sale. We used the funds to invest in a sizeable yacht—for further sojourning—and a motorboat to entertain our children and grandkids. Of course, we also purchased a surfeit of inflatable water toys to keep the kids entertained and encourage frequent trips to grandma and grandpa’s house.

    Use Good Tow Ropes

Before going out on the water to go skiing or pulling someone on a towable make sure you check the tow ropes that you have on your boat and make sure they are in good condition, check for frayed areas on the rope that could show a weak spot.  If a rope breaks when you or slinging someone on a towable they could slide into the shore and heart themselves and the same could happen if you did not attach the rope properly.  Tow ropes come in several lengths and strength letting you pull a lot of weight, or one to maybe as many as six people, but make sure you do not pull more weight than the rope is designed to pull.
